Editor's Note: This is a revised and corrected version of this story. The earlier version contained a quote that was erroneously attributed to Michael Ledeen. Most Americans have never heard of Michael Ledeen, but if the United States ends up in an extended shooting war throughout the Middle East, it will be largely due to his inspiration. A fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, Ledeen holds a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. He is a former employee of the Pentagon, the State Department and the National Security Council. As a consultant working with NSC head Robert McFarlane, he was involved in the transfer of arms to Iran during the Iran-Contra affair -- an adventure that he documented in the book "Perilous Statecraft: An Insider's Acco

Here`s the truth of why we invaded Iraq--Michael Leeden. This is not only a fascinating read--but the truth revealed about the neocons that ran the American war machine for the past eight years.
If you're a libertarian or a onservative, this is not what you want to hear or believe.
Pat Buchannan:
Pat Buchanan, a powerful and sane anti-war voice in theU.S. put the best gloss on American war aims in one of his columns.
“The neoconservative dream was to create a pro-American, free-market democracy inIraq to serve as a model and catalyst for Arab peoples and convert Iraq into a base camp of American Empire, flanking Iran and Syria . It was to bring to power an Iraqi De Gaulle named Ahmed Chalabi, who would recognize Israel , build a Mosul-to-Haifa oil pipeline and become the Simon Bolivar of the Middle East .”
He seems to have what I would call an insane view of war. Almost entirely backwards.
War solves one problem and only one problem. We have so much ware because that problem is so prevalent. Over population.
If a country does not have both the resources and the government sufficient for it's population, war breaks out. It continues until one of the 'end results' happens:
Attempting to create a democracy by outside violence is a poor idea. Too many ways your attempt to fix the problem can end up making it worse. You can kill enough enemey soldiers so that the ineffienct government can manage to hang onto power. You can get the evil government to find new technology and resources from your enemeies. You can kill off the stupid members of the evil army, allowing bright, smart evil men to take over.
Better to peacibly prevent the evil country from attacking others. Eventually that country will either end up in a revolution/civil war (Iran) where it will either evolve a better, more democratic government or achieve a death grip on it's own population, slowly strangling itself (North Korea). But the death grip is a tightrope. Eventually sane leaders (or their heirs) realize what they are doing and stop.
This is just not a post to stir up controversy. This is the actual thinking of a man who was on the inside. He was a major player within the military establishment. These are the hideous things rarely discussed on this forum. This strikes at the heart of the neo-conservative philosophy. It's packaged and sold as American patriotism.
