Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said earlier this week that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November. Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin. But his statements represent the Democrats' strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years. When asked during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, whether he would "pursue the violations that have been made against our Constitution by the present administration", Biden answered in the affirmative "We will not be stopped from pursuing any criminal offence that's occur

I think McCain winning is becoming a bigger certainty. The Wal-Mart crowd likely ate up last night's speech and the Democrats don't have the stomach to really fight back. The one thing that I really, really, really dislike about Obama is that he's a closet Friedmanite. He lies pretty hard when he comes out with the more favorable populist stuff. If you look at his connections with the Chicago School of Economics, they are a bit scary. In addition, if you listen to the entire "guns and bitter" speech in San Francisco (the parts that are too boring to include) he goes into all this Strong Dollar policy BS and restructruing free trade regimes and Doha this and Doha that and opening up new markets with the a more exertive commerce department...I mean he sounds like a flippin' Republican that can't come out and say so. It really make him seem a bit insincere.
Something that's been missing during the Bush Administration is fiscal discipline: compare the state of the economy today and eight years ago.
I have no problem with a candidate who is fiscally conservative and socially progressive.
In fact, that sounds like an almost ideal candidate.
Victor-
I just posted one of the many stories associated with this assertion: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080630/klein
It's now on skewz as well
One of my biggest worries about Obama is that you really don't know who he is and what he's all about. With no legislative history, and nothing more than high level statements, he could be a Friedmanite or he could be a communist. No one knows.
I think a lot of his popularity comes from people reading into him what they want to see. Everyone thinks he is their own personal dream candidate. It would be ironic if he lost his popularity because people started reading into him what they didn't want to see. But that would be fine.
At least with McCain you know exactly what you're getting. He may be a Republican, but he's not that bad.
Frodar:
Your summary of the Obama dream is as good as anything I have seen or read anywhere. In essence The Messiah is a blank slate onto which every person can write his own narrative. Having said that there are some conclusions we can draw with a certain amount of assurance. For instance, since he is running as a Democrat it is highly unlikely that he would be a Milton Messiah. Much more likely he would be a Marxian Messiah.
Once again a very nice and succinct analysis of the Dream Candidate.
M- It's quite clear from the the tone of the right that they are mostly driven by arrogance and hate. I think people will start to wake up to that. Calling Obama the Messiah would be like me calling Palin Hitler - which is probably a closer analog. It's really annoying and only diminishes your arguments. Now, as far as knowing where someone stands...I'd disagree. McCain is all over the place these days as he panders to the far right. Against the immigration bill that he himself wrote, against torture now for it...I mean come on. In the end, I think the Dems are acting classy and are the ones laying off the personal attacks. I can see that on the right, hate is the fuel that seems to drive people. In some ways that's an element that the right on the US shares with some unsavory people around the world.
Can you really say that after the way he has had to change his message to appeal to republicans at large.
I used to respect him. I dont' trust him anymore.
