John McCain's convention gambit is now a culture war strategy. It depends for its execution on conflict with journalists , and with bloggers (the "angry left," Bush called them last night) along with confusion between and among the press, the blogosphere, and the Democratic party. It revives cultural memory: the resentment narrative after Chicago '68 but with the angry left more distributed. It dispenses with issues and seeks a trial of personalities. It bets big time on backlash. At the center of the strategy is the flashpoint candidacy of Sarah Palin, a charismatic figure around whom the war can be brought to scale, as it were. In fact the Politico is reporting just that: Palin reignites culture wars I have no idea if the ignition system will work; nor do I claim that "this is what they

There is absolutely no "spirit" of bipartisanship here. This woman brought in the party big guns for a small town mayoral election that historically had no partisan or heavy party element to it. That says it all. Cheney number 2 on the way folks. 4 years of being in the grip of the same people currently in charge.
When you contemptuously refer to the other side as "the Messiah" when little name calling of that calibre goes the other way, it's all you need to know about the spirit of the people that constitute the party. McCain, even if he wanted to, won't really be able to reach across because he'll be kept in line by the party and the party faithful.
It will be interesting to see how Christian Evangelicals vote, especially now that Governor Palin is on the ticket.
On one hand, yes, the older members of the Evangelical community will most likely vote Republican.
On the other hand, the Obama campaign has been making overtures to younger Evangelical voters for some time now, and Governor Palin's name on the ticket may not amount to much for them.
I'd like to see how the Evangelical vote looks when charted by age.
I think they will swing back to the flock. Remember, Palin's church said that those who do not support George Bush will go to hell. That's a great and compelling value proposition to vote for the GOP. If that kind of hate is being spewed in churches around the country then you can be the evangelicals will come back into the fold. Churches were used to organize the KKK at the turn of the last century. They have once again become first and foremost bastions of intolerance in direct contrast to the teachings upon which they were founded.
The KKK did the dirty work for the Democrat party. They did things like kill Republicans and terrorize Blacks who wanted to exercise their right to vote. The KKK helped the Democrats, not the church.
The republicans happily sucked up the KKK after th Southern Strategy. The Dixiecrats became Rupublicans or publicly renounced their racism. The Repulbicans are not the racist party, and seemingly fine with it. Name a Democrat who keeps nooses and dixie flags in their offices?
The Democrat's nickname for Sen. Robert Byrd is "Sheets" because of his past association with the Klan. If he was a Republican, the Democrats would have forced him to resign.
The addition of Palin does scramble the situation, beyond what McCain and his aides could have imagined. But I'm guessing they are recognizing that it has turned out to be a good choice, not in the sense that it was fully thought out, but in that she is the wild card. If he had named, as expected, another white man in a suit to the ticket, that would be the sole point of discussion, and the ticket would offer no excitement. With Palin, there is so much excitement, with points both good and bad, that all bets are off. Since when would it be a point of honor to have a pregnant teenage daughter? This ticket is providing us with shock and awe.
Lets clear up a few things, folks:
1. Loco, the term "messiah" was unbelievably fitting, and quite frankly - you all deserved it - hey, it was not us who was bowing down to the skinny black flim-flam artist from Chicago - anybody with half a brain would point that out; you have grown, supposedly mature men who are comparing BHO to a late night stiff erection and describing an interview with him as "making the thigh tingle" - and then you are sitting there wondering in awe why anyone would dare label him your
"messiah??? Did you take a stupid pill this morning or do you just like to ignore months and months of hearing the man say things like "the tides will turn and the oceans will change and a light will come down from somewhere and the planet will be healed" bullshit?? What exactly is it that you would expect? People find the behavior immature and despicable (and I am being polite).
2. ??? "remember that Palin's church says that anyone who doesn't vote for George Bush will go to hel" ?? Where did that come from - the lower portion of your body??
3. The left is actually (I am trying so hard to stop laughing so I can type) suggesting
that the McCain Party has somehow conjured up this Palin imaginary woman who must have also "conjured up" the down syndrome baby that she would not abort because she is pro-life, along with a respectable family and a good record
of service. They act as if the woman's entire life has been lived a specific way, only so just on the slight possiblility that one day some Presidential nominee might
ask her to be his VP on the ticket - she would have this imaginary good record to
show. Quess what: people don't live their entire lives acting respectably just in case someone years from now might ask them to do something they never expected - that idea is just ridiculous. Isn't more likely that the woman is just a
good example and a good role model? Truly, isn't THAT more likely to be the truth?
Ah, but we will have that whining and complaining left, who will say "boo hoo hoo, they just found this highly respectable, hard-working, true to her word lady and nominated her for McCains VP just to be mean to us...boohoo"..
Here is a tiny bit of truth for you, if you think you may be able to handle it:
we all know you will go out of your way and spend millions of dollars trying to
trash a decent woman; it's a given, because trashing people of values has become what the left is known for, and we all know that it makes no difference to you whether it be truth or lie, as long as you get what you are paying for, so you
go ahead and print your lies and your bullshit, because there is one thing that you
cannot alter: The truth is still the truth, no matter what kind of dirt you wish to throw on top of it; and a lie is still a lie, no matter how much you try to scrubby-dub it up and make it look nice. A pig is still a pig even if you put it in cashmere.
The American voters are not stupid, even if you wish they were, and when they see bunch of pigs wearing cashmere, they still know its a bunch of pigs.
As Jesus said to Judas: "go on out and do what is in your heart to do".
Reallytrue- your tirade proves my point. You guys can't and don't want to work with the other side. It's a crock. No one on the national scene has called anyone on the right names. Look at the differences between the speeches at the DNC and RNC. Any truly religious person will see one side is motivated by hate and the other love. The tone and tenor of your post are revealing.
Are you kidding? I suppose the Democrats love Bush when they call him ChimpyMcHaliburton or Bushhitler.
What Democrat are you speaking of?
Also note that that is focused on a person and not a class of people.
Excellent point Locoleftie: There's actually hate and venom in his tone. And, no doubt racism as well.
"The skinny black flim-flam artist from Chicago". I'm wondering if our good frend Marlowe will weigh in on the remarks.
I've noted the absolute negative tone of the Repbulican party throughout the process. And, there's nothing Godly about it.
Before you saying anything else that is untrue: http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/09/palins_past_pastor_bushfoes_he.html
So, the Christian right is using God in the same way that the Church of St. Peter used it in Spain during the inquisition. Sounds like the same rhetoric to me. At the very least they should lose their tax exempt status.
Now, explain to me how the Messiah label is fitting? Remember, you guys institutionalize ole W with stickers making him out to be some savior. Let's not be hypocrtical.
Ahhhh yes--Jesus. That infinitely wonderful community organizer.
