This seems a clueless comment about blacks, feminists, liberals and Oprah. Are you an expert on Oprah? How often do you watch? Are you a women? Are you a black? Are you a liberal? There is a lot of wild speculation here.
"Refused to help a fellow black,Clarence Thomas, sell his book" is getting into racial stereotyping. Have you ever said Bill O'Reilly refused to help a fellow white sell a book or movie?
I wouldn't change a word of it except to add this. Where were the Feminists defending Sarah Palin after the media frenzy of last week. I'll tell you where they are. Home sitting on their hands. Palin's not a Liberal therefore no support for her from Feminists.
I never WATCH Oprah but I do tune in occasionally to see what she is saying.
NEWSFLASH: Oprah has a BOOKCLUB. Oprah routinely interviews authors. Bill O'Reilly has no book club and virtually never does book tour interviews.
Newsflash: Oprah is NOT A NEWS PROGRAM. It's her show. She'll do what she wants. These bizarro tactics on the right are weird. She's already come out for Obama just like O'Reilly who is a "news guy" has essentially come out for McCain. Which is worse?
NEWS FLASH TO LEFTIE:
O'Reilly has not come out for anyone. You are totally correct. Oprah can do whatever she wants.
Elemming: I've said it, and I'll say it again. Marlowe's comments are shallow on the finer subject of race. See how neatly he bonds Oprah with the so-called black cause. That cause, being of couse, that a black should reach out to help another black.
"Refused to help a fellow black".
That type of thinking and rhetoric smells of racial stereotyping to me!
It wasn't a comment about blacks, feminists or Oprah. It was about LIBERALS.
Now who is making CLUELESS comments.
Sounds like a no-win situation, Marlowe.
If Oprah does bring Governor Palin onto her show, she (Oprah) will be derided for being an Obama partisan launching a hit piece on Palin.
If she doesn't? She's a bad feminist. Not fair and balanced.
It's a talk show, not "Face The Nation". It's influential among a certain demographic, but under no constraints other than to garner ratings for its advertisers.
Victor:
You are correct. Not "Face the Nation"-- basically a chick-chat show.
Oprah's stock in trade is Female and Black issues.
Oprah is vindictive. Witness the snub of Clarence Thomas
Oprah could face a real backlash on this because Palin is very popular with her viewers.
Ultimately not a big deal
Based on how this appears to be playing out, it almost seems fabricated to create either 1. an appearance on Oprah for a favorable play for Palin or 2. a seeming denial of appearance for Palin which would also play to her benefit. Seems like a political gimmick or dirty trick to me.
LEFTIE:
Very nice analysis of the problem. It's basically a lose-lose for Oprah. However that is not the case for Palin. It's a big win if she gets on and media bias if she doesn't. Oprah knows this and WON'T PUT PALIN ON.
Oprah would much rather be called NAMES for not putting her on than run the risk of helping Palin who undoubtedly would do a great job if on the show.
I'm not so sure about here doing well. If Oprah talks about her pastor any semblence of this being a "post-partisan" administration would evaporate. It's clear McCain was pressured to take on Palin by the power brokers in the GOP. The same would be likely once he is office. When your pastor tells you that you may are likely going to Hell if you don't vote for George Bush, that's about as partisan as it gets (in fact, I can't think of a MORE partisan line). As such, I think there would be some exposure of Palin's rather extreme views which would line up well with her current attack dog role. Women, who based on the latest gallup surveys, want less partisanship would likely be turned off by some of the digging below the surface which would go on. But, I don't think this is a problem with Palin exclusively. McCain is essentially the lackluster lead for the GOP ticket. Most of the GOP do want Palin style policies and politics. If that is what the majority of the US wants, then she will be a hit. If there is sincere "post-partisan" air in the polity then she may not. You will note that the common attack line during the convention was against a class of people like "liberals"...read, half the population or so. In the Dem convention, things were less categorical. The issue was GWB and his policies. From a psychological view, the right truly needs "Satans" to be out there to fear and hate literally and figuratively. This psychology is well represented by Hagee who often says that voting for GWB is needed to defeat Satan. The same is apprarently true of Palin's pastor. This type of thinking fuels a sort of absolutism and definition of enemy that really would make it difficult to reach across the aisle because it would be making a pact with Lucifer himself. I, of course, believe this proto-fascist type of thinking is incredibly dangerous and harkens back to Sinclair Lewis' famous warning to America of when fascism comes to America it will be wearing a flag and carrying a cross. I don't think I'm exagerating. When you bring divine retribution into politics, it speaks volumes. The U-S-A chants at the GOP convention were also disturbing. It suggested that the others side was unAmerican. That narrative is being pounded in at both the national and grass roots level. With it being so pervasive and ingrained in Palin's DNA at this point, I don't think there is much credence to any bipartisanship associated with a McCain administration. It's a lie that is convenient for the base to get elected. Empirical evidence suggests it's not true. Palin worked within the GOP in Alaska. Bipartisanship would not be part of her DNA. It might be inevitable that we head for some warped one-party rule. But that would only hasten the end of the US.
Excellent take on the matter Locoleftie. We'd be going back in time, not foward, with a McCain administration. I feel that the country has reached a poing of critical mass--you'll note the extremely high (historical) numbers for to vote on the dems ticket across the country.
It would be impossible to move the country forward under the rule of religious zealots!
Oprah's smart, and her viewers are't that petty. Politics is not a part of the shows appeal to women.
It's a ploy by the right to give her exposure wthout being further vetted.
Oprah's stock is female, and HUMAN INTEREST issues. I see no vindictiveness in Oprah. She's simply too smart to play into the hands of the religious right.
"Oprah's stock is female, and HUMAN INTEREST issues"--Cianan
Very good description but she is into books big time. As for the vindictiveness I'll have to disagree. The second ever black SCOTUS writes a book and she won't grant him an interview? HOW AM I TO INTERPRET THAT?
Show me the context that allowed you to drag "religious right" into this discussion about Oprah.
Again, her appeal is not race-based for her audience! What obligation does she have to grant anyone an interview based solely on race? You seem to be more focused on race here than anyone--and that includes me.
HOW AM I TO INTEPREAT THAT?" Why should you take it to task to interpret it at all? There are no wrtten rules that if a white author writes a book, Oprah has to have the individual on her show for any reason! She caters to the interests of her demographic--pure and simple.
This is so obvious I don't need to explain it to you.
You are right her SHOW is not race based (usually) and she can have anyone on she wants.
NO, the correction is that her show is not raced based--at all!
Thank you.
I guess you're right about Oprah never saying anything about RACE
Go ahead and give a listen.
