This is one of the most evil, vile ideas ever created. It is supported by evil men. The gas tax is one of the best ideas every. It charges more for each gallon. So the idiot that buys an RV and drives it from their home to their work pays more than the guy that buys a scooter. OK, so if and when we get non-gas powered vehicles we will have to charge them something as well. So they pay a kilowatt/btu tax instead of gasoline tax. If you fuel up your electrical car, then we charge a tax per kilowatt. It's not that hard to create an equivelent tax - we can do it based on a straight percentage instead of a per gallon. I.E. straight 10% sales tax on whatever fuel you use. Or if we are smart, we could make it based on pollution estimates (i.e. 5 cents per pound of air pollition creation/use of your energy type). Switching as the U of Iowa suggest to an incredibally obnoxius, privacy destroying, GPS system is MORONIC. Not only does it violate our rights to privacy, but it also has NO mechanism built in to reward those that use more efficient vehicles rather than less. In my mind, this is mainly be supported by Fascists that want to know where we are, oil companies that want to eliminate the fair charge put in place to pay for their pollution, and idiots that think "they won't let raise the gas tax, maybe I can sneak it in this way".
