WASHINGTON ? Morale has fallen among soldiers in Afghanistan , where troops are seeing record violence in the 8-year-old war, while those in Iraq show much improved mental health amid much lower violence, the Army said Friday. Soldier suicides in Iraq did not increase for the first time since 2004, according to a new study. Though findings of two new battlefield surveys are similar in several ways to the last ones taken in 2007, they come at a time of intense scrutiny on Afghanistan as President Barack Obama struggles to come up with a new war strategy and planned troop buildup. There is also perhaps equal new attention focused on the mental health of the force since a shooting rampage at Fort Hood last week in which an Army psychiatrist is charged. Both surveys showed that soldiers on the

I`ll tell you a secret O. The soldiers know they`re in a war where there is no clear victory. So exactly what type of leadership are they looking for from any president?
But here`s the real question: How many stories have we read of soldiers who joined just to provide health care for their families? How many soldiers join simply for the GI Bill? How many soldiers join because there are no jobs? How many men and women joined because of some slick recruiter who promised him or her they`d get a chance to see the world up close and personal.
It`s a poor man`s war O. It always has been, and always will be. Haven`t you figured that out yet?
And you think they saw leadership in Bush?...LOL. I bet you watch Glenn Beck religiously don't you?
As a veteran I know what it's like to be somewhere that you were sent, and then be abandoned by your government. We went through this same scenario in Vietnam. Guys don't join the Army for the benefits, at least no one I remember. We join because our heritage demands it of us. And those in the service represent a real cross section of economic classes, races, religions, etc.
The President we have now is lost and doesn't know where he is or where he is going. Having this weigh on your mind as your out in the field is a horrible feeling. Your're on the other side of the world, where no one really knows you, and some idiot is trying to shoot you. This is one of the biggest reasons soldiers bond together., it's not the great benefit program.
RonB51, Thanks for your service.
I served with destinction as well. We are in two wars because the last administrtion lost sight of where the terrorists were. Perhaps those weapsons of mass destruction we failed to find are in your basement. Your living in a time warp my friend. People have always signed the dotted line becasue of the benefits that would follow. In today's armed forces, the recruitters don't sell the horror of war....or didn't you get this memo?
Speaking of distinction, you and I may be the only ones on this forum to have served. Perhaps this conversation should reamain between you and I---true Americans.
Everyone has personal reasons why they join the military. That does not change the fact that they do a valuable service for all the free world and those that hope to be free. people don`t serve so that others will say thank you, but it does help for them to know that someone took a moment to think ,and say thank you . The real problem with weak leadership by the president is.#1 will he provide you with all the resources you need to win #2 If you are captured what lengths would he authorize to free you#3 is the state department strong in their image and are diplomatic measures being taken to successfully conclude the action. #4 will you win the military action and then the state department not enforce an arrangement that will promote stability in the region and assure peace.THE PRESIDENT IS RESPONSIBLE for providing strong leadership to accomplish these goals,as well as explain to the public at home and all those watching around the world why the action is needed and what will determine when it is deemed a success. we have a military success but the state department has not put in place all the elements to leave and let the people govern themselves.
